NCM Fathom and BY Experience are partnering to present LEONARDO LIVE, a preview of the UK's National Gallery landmark exhibition "Leonardo da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan," captured live in November 2011 and broadcast on a delayed basis to movie screens around the world. This never-before-seen exhibition brings together the largest number of Leonardo's rare surviving paintings and some international loans. The historic exhibition is sold out in London, and due to the fragility of the paintings, the exhibition cannot tour. Art lovers globally will have the chance to be part of this highly-anticipated gallery presentation, the first-ever captured live in high-definition, for global move theatre audiences. The program is hosted by respected historian Tim Marlow and presenter Mariella Frostrup.
While numerous exhibitions have looked at Leonardo da Vinci as an inventor, scientist or draughtsman, this is the first to be dedicated to his aims and techniques as a painter. In particular, it concentrates on the work he produced as court painter to Duke Lodoico Storza in Milan in the late 1480s and 1490s.
Featuring the finest paintings and drawings of Leonardo and his followers, the exhibition examines Leonardo's pursuit for perfection in his representation of the human form. Works on display include "La Belle Ferroniere" (Musee du Louvre, Paris), the "Madonna Litta" (Hermitage, Saint Petersburg) and "Saint Jerome" (Pinacoteca Vaticana, Rome). Two versions of Leonardo's "Virgin of the Rocks"--belonging to the National Gallery and the Lourve--will also be shown together for the first time.
The final part of the exhibition features a near-contemporary, full-scale copy of Leonardo's famous "Last Supper," on loan from the Royal Academy. Seen alongside all the surviving preparatory drawings made by Leonardo for the "Last Supper," visitors will discover how such a large-scale painting was designed and executed.
The New York Times says the exhibit is "a wildly popular museum show, captivating the public to a degree no one anticipated." Guardian says "the show is dazzling, mysterious and disturbing. That there are any paintings to show at all is something of a miracle" and the Telegraph adds "a breathtaking and truly remarkable exhibition...the greatest exhibition of the century."
